Page Background

The imagery within this panel exemplifies the

orchard industry in the area. While the train line

to Eltham was opened in 1902, it was extended

to Hurstbridge to support the fruit industry.

This panel incorporates an historic panorama of

an orchard and a photograph of bee keepers in

the Hurstbridge and Diamond Creek area. The

presence of bees are vital to any fruit growing

enterprise.

The featured plant in this panel is the cherry plum

or

Prunus cerasifera,

which now commonly grows

alongside our creeks and rivers as a reminder of

the fruit industry of our forefathers. It is for this

reason that this is the only panel that does not

contain an indigenous plant.
