This image of the bluestone chapel at Montsalvat

was photographed from the Eltham Cemetery.

Like other buildings at Montsalvat, materials

used to build the chapel were recycled from

locations in Melbourne. One of these being the

Trades Hall Council building in Fitzroy. It is said

that Justus Jörgensen spent 12 years building the

chapel carting small loads of materials at a time

on the tray of his ‘Baby Austin’. This chapel is

non-denominational and welcomes ceremonies

and weddings from all religions.

The plant selected for this panel is the

Allocasuarina

littoralis

or black she-oak.The foliage of this tree

creates a soft and somewhat mysterious frame

around this medieval influenced chapel.
