Another great ‘Eltham Institution’ is the
Diamond Valley Miniature Railway, which began
in 1961 with equipment relocated from the
closed Chelsworth Park Railway in Ivanhoe.
Since its opening, the railway has seen the
largest number of passengers of any other
miniature railway in Australia. The fifteen
minute ride on the miniature railway travels
over hills, through tunnels and across bridges
for two kilometres through a natural bushland
setting, along the banks of the Diamond Creek in
the Eltham Lower Park.
Miniature trains include scaled diesel
locomotives, steam engines and suburban red
rattlers. The red rattler featured within this
panel is modelled on the Eltham train that
once carried passengers along the Hurstbridge
line to the city. This railway is run entirely
by volunteers and all ticket money is used
for maintenance, track extensions and some
donated to local charities. Since establishment
some donations have been made to local
community groups.
The featured native plant in this panel is
Lomandra
longifolia,
a thick grass that is indigenous to the area
and grows along the banks of the Diamond Creek.
